🔪 How to Make Apple Chips in the Air Fryer

Slice 2 apples on the thinest setting on your mandolin slicer.

If you don’t have a mandolin, you can slice by hand using a sharp knife.

Place them on a paper towel-lined plate and sprinkle on your favorite sugar and spices.  I used coconut sugar, ground cinnamon and nutmeg, but you can leave them plain or add what you like.

9 thin slices of apples on paper towels with cinnamon on top

Transfer the apple slices to the basket of your air fryer, not overlapping. I was able to fit 3 rows of 3 slices for a total of 9 slices in each batch.

Air fry at 325°F for 12 minutes, flipping the apples 1-2 times in between, or until crisp.

Allow the apple chips to cool for 10–15 minutes to allow them to crisp up.  Repeat the process until all the chips are cooked.

💡 Tips for Making Air Fryer Apple Chips

    • Choose the right apples: Use firm, crisp apples like Pink Lady, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji for the best texture.
    • Slice evenly: Slice the apples thinly and uniformly, about ⅛-inch thick, to ensure they cook evenly. A mandoline slicer can be very helpful.
    • Pat dry: If the apple slices seem to have a lot of extra moisture, you'll want to pat them dry with a paper towel.
    • Avoid overlapping: Arrange the apple slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket without overlapping to allow for proper air circulation.
    • Preheat the air fryer: Preheat your air fryer for a few minutes before adding the apple slices to ensure even cooking.
    • Flip them: To make sure both sides get nice and crispy, give them a flip halfway through cooking.
    • Keep a watch on them: Keep a close eye on the apple chips during the last few minutes of cooking, as they can go from perfectly crispy to burned quickly.
    • Let them cool: After removing them from the air fryer, let the apple chips cool on a wire rack. They will continue to crisp up as they cool.

    ☑️ Storage Instructions

If you have leftovers, transfer them to an airtight container and store them in a cool, dry place. Avoid packing too many apple chips into one container. Overcrowding can cause them to break and lose their texture.

    🔄 Substitutions and Additions

    • Vanilla sugar: Sprinkle apple slices with vanilla bean-infused sugar for a slight vanilla flavor.
    • Glazed chips: Brush the apple slices with a thin layer of maple syrup or honey before air frying.
    • Spice blends: Add a sprinkle of pumpkin spice or apple pie spice for a warm, Fall flavor.
    • Chili powder: For a spicy twist, lightly sprinkle chili powder on the apple slices before air frying.
    • Lemon zest: Grate a bit of lemon zest over the crispy apple slices to give them a bright, citrusy kick.
    • Cocoa powder: Dust the apple slices with a light layer of cocoa powder for a chocolatey flavor without added sweetness.

Why are My Apple Chips Soggy?

If your chips are soggy, it is usually because the apples were sliced to thick or you did not let them cook long enough.

Which Type of Apple Makes the Best Chips?

You'll want to choose apples that are firm and crisp, so they will hold up well during air frying process. Granny Smith, honey crisp, and pink lady apples are excellent choices due to their slightly tart and sweet flavor and firm texture.

Is Coconut Sugar Healthier Than Refined White Sugar?

Coconut sugar is considered a healthier option that regular white sugar for several reasons:

    • Lower glycemic index: Coconut sugar has a lower glycemic index compared to white sugar. This means it causes a slower rise in blood glucose levels, which can be beneficial for managing blood sugar levels.
    • Nutritional content: Coconut sugar retains nutrients from the coconut palm, including iron, zinc, calcium, and potassium. White sugar, on the other hand, is highly processed and stripped of most nutrients.
    • Less processed: Coconut sugar is minimally processed and does not undergo bleaching or chemical alterations like white sugar. This makes it a more natural and less refined option.
    • Contains inulin: Coconut sugar contains a type of fiber called inulin, which can slow glucose absorption, acting as a prebiotic.

Shouldn't I Peel the Apple Before Air Frying?

No, peeling them is optional. Leaving the peel on adds extra fiber and nutrients, and it also helps the chips hold their shape better.
