If I had to guess, I’d say that deviled eggs are probably the most popular appetizer served at parties. They’re also wildly popular at potlucks, as most everyone is well versed in making them. What I love about this recipe is the addition of the cajun shrimp and the flavor they bring to otherwise ordinary deviled eggs.
I use an easy homemade cajun seasoning mix that it also good in so many other dishes and it’s easy to whip up, using common ingredients you can find at any grocery store. It really helps make these deviled eggs extra special, especially with the sautéed shrimp sitting on top.

They are certainly not your average deviled eggs! Also be sure to try my Classic Deviled Eggs, Smoked Salmon Deviled Eggs or Deviled Eggs with Tajín.

💡 Tips for Making Deviled Eggs
- You might be tempted to use large or jumbo shrimp, as they are usually the size of choice for most recipes. They are just too large for deviled eggs, but the medium shrimp are the perfect size.
- To save time and prep this recipe a day in advance, you can hard boil your eggs and peel them. Then store them in an airtight container until you’re ready to make them. It is recommended to make the shrimp right before serving, as reheating them can cause them to be overcooked.
- Allow the shrimp to cool to room temperature before topping the eggs, otherwise the filling will become runny.
- To get a whipped consistency for the filling, you can blend it using a hand mixer or food processor.
- If you want to pipe out the filling with a fancy tip, hold off on cooking the shrimp until you’ve chilled the filling for at least 30 minutes. This will give the filling time to firm up and be the perfect consistency for piping.
- You can also stand the shrimp upright, instead of lying them flat on top. They are easier to eat when the shrimp are flat, which is why I wrote the recipe that way. If you’re after are fancier presentation, by all means stand them up.

☑️ Storage Instructions
Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.

🔄 Substitutions and Additions
- If you don’t have mayonnaise or prefer to use something else, you can use Greek yogurt instead.
- You can make this same recipe with scallops, prepared the same way, just be sure they are cooked through as they take a little longer to cook than the smaller shrimp.
- If you don’t have fresh lemon juice, you can use either white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar instead.
- If you prefer to skip the touch of heat from the hot sauce, you can omit it.
- If you don’t have cajun seasoning, you can use smoked paprika instead.

Is cajun seasoning good in eggs?
Yes, and actually you can even add some to your scrambled eggs for added flavor.
Is it better to make deviled eggs the night before or the day of?
I always prefer to hard boil my eggs the night before, but it’s really a personal preference.
What is the best cajun seasoning for boiled eggs?
I actually use this homemade Cajun Seasoning mix as it has the perfect balance of flavors and is easy to mix up.
How much ahead of time can you boil eggs for deviled eggs?
You can boil them several days in advance, but I prefer 1-2 days max. The reason being is if you have leftover deviled eggs, you’ll want to be able to store them safely in the fridge for 3-4 days.
